Alanya - the Shopping Paradise
The bazaar of Alanya is a real shopping paradise and might be one of the biggest bazaars at the south coast. Between Dolmus railway
station and harbour you find a very big bazaar
area, separated from the major road, the Atatürk Caddesi (street). In the close alleys and corners you can easily get lost, but with some exercise this is no problem any more.
A checkpoint is the main street which cuts the bazaar in two parts. In the bazaar - like everywhere in Turkey - clothes in different qualities, leather goods (bags, shoes and clothes) silver or gold jewellery, sweets and naturally the inevitable little presents ... recently one finds in several shops beautiful cans and other zinc and precious metal tableware in the Ottoman style.
If you buy clothes then they are much cheaper than the UK, but you have to check the quality as well as the authenticity of the designer labels.
Another idea is to have clothes done by one of the many tailors in Alanya - if you want to have a classical lady's or men's wear, it is very cheap and good quality. They finish the most clothes in just one week.
In the atmospheric shopping streets you will find local handicrafts such as copper goods, painted ceramics, hand woven carpets and kilims competing with street stalls selling "genuine fake watches", designer name clothing and natural sponges. Jewellery shops abound offering a huge array of beautiful designs and there are fabrics, famed Turkish towelling, boxes of sweet pistachio filled Turkish delight and pastry shops with a tempting selection of sweet and savoury.

The story of Turkish carpets dates back more than 3,000 years and over the years millions of Turks have been occupied producing and selling carpets.
These colourful and often very beautiful carpets differ from other oriental carpets by being the only ones in the world knotted with double knots.
Technically this means that each knot itself is secured twice around the transverse threads. Turkish carpets are therefore said to last longer than other handmade carpets.
To ensure the carpet is handmade try turning it over to have a look at the fringes on the edge of the carpet. On machine made carpets this edge will often be sewn onto the carpet. Also try to pull the fringes. The thread should yield through the whole carpet.
There are three main types of hand knotted carpets.
Wool on wool: Because of the thicker wool thread, a coarser and not such a fine carpet.
Wool on cotton: Here the wool thread is knotted around a transverse cotton thread. The pattern is a little finer and therefore also a little more expensive.
Silk: The finest most expensive carpets.
Every region in Turkey has their own way of decorating and producing carpets. Among the most well known are the Milas carpets from the western part of Turkey. These carpets have a yellowish colour and are mainly wool carpets.
Konya carpets on the other hand are made from cotton of a very high quality. They are knotted with many extra double knots and are usually decorated with medallions from Seljuk times.
The nomads normally use symbols from their everyday life when decorating their carpets. For example the scorpion is a popular motif, since it illustrates their freedom, while a camel foot symbolizes their means of transport. Generally the nomads make very colourful carpets.
Finally there are carpets from the Herake region. The best carpets with the most double knots are produced here. They come in both cotton and silk and usually have a flower motif. Until Turkey became a republic, the Herake region only made carpets for Sultans palaces.

When I entered the quaint Yenihal market on Friday morning in the northern part of Alanya, I was completely overwhelmed by the numerous sensations from all the different fruits, spices, colours, sounds and people that I encountered.
One of the first things I saw were the many small stalls from which all kinds of clothes, shoes and knick-knacks were being sold at very good prices! Whenever I found something I liked a seller would come up to me and we would start to haggle over the price. This can be a lot of fun and you usually end up with a really good bargain especially if you compare prices with those of Northern Europe! After this I found my way through the narrow, covered path to the enormous fruit and vegetable market.
It really seemed as though every grower from the surrounding area had come to Alanya on this particular Friday to sell his goods! Everywhere I went in the market the fruit and vegetables looked really wonderful and fresh and I was allowed to check everything before buying. Many of the sellers even gave me samples to taste. And once again the prices really surprised me. It was so inexpensive to buy such good quality fresh fruit and vegetables that I simply could not help myself and I bought far too much to eat in one day. Consequently for the next few days I ate nothing but delicious fruit and vegetables!
So one thing is definite when I return to Alanya next summer, spending my Friday morning at the large, inviting Yenihal market is something that I just have to do.
Location: the Yenihal Market is situated between the 35 metre and 25 metre streets in the north-western part of Alanya.
Follow the 25 metre street until it crosses Oral Street by the large set of traffic lights. Then walk in a northerly direction for approximately 150 metres. On your left hand side you will find the Yenihal Market.
